Defining formats for new interactions between people, spaces and technology

The Living Lab is our platform for prototyping new kinds of experiences across the ever-evolving worlds of retail, exhibitions, and events.

research tracks drive the Living Lab

Track 1

Sentient Spaces

Our research into Sentient Spaces explores how technology can create environments that are able to adapt in real time with the help of tools like computer vision and language models. Digitally-enhanced spaces unlock a completely new design paradigm for experience designers, enabling us to create spaces that invite people to connect more intimately and personally with their surroundings.

The Floor

A generative theatre play

The Floor proposes an interplay between visitors, AI and physical space, transforming them into characters that play an active role in an emerging, generative narrative. Our ambition is to build a dynamic environment that is not programmed beforehand and therefore is able to transform itself constantly and create a dynamic narrative based on how the people inside behave.

Track 2

Digital-Physical Interfaces

Our research into Digital-Physical interfaces explores immersive experiences that elegantly merge our digital and physical realities, creating intuitive interactions through presence, gesture, and movement. These hybrid interfaces allow for new ways of storytelling, sometimes bold, sometimes subtle but always grounded in human experience.

The Lens merges the qualities of real, physical objects with those of their digital representations. This seamless integration enables an intuitive, interactive way to discover products without the need of a phone. Interacting with The Lens triggers sensory responses outside of the screen, creating a form of immersion that goes beyond traditional AR.

Track 3

Communal Presence

Our research into Communal Presence explores how digital technology implanted in physical spaces can stimulate authentic social connections. Technology has the potential to physically bring people together and stimulate social cohesion, moving it forward from the common perception that it is isolating.

In this early prototype, an LLM guides a group of individuals using the minimal input of their x- and y-coordinates. A rotating iPad directs its attention to individuals close by and employs different persuasion techniques to make people come into the circle and start walking around.  Whenever someone leaves, it will try to get them back on track: “The circle is empty! It’s so lonely here! Please come back...”
